The Broncos are the 2011-2012 Division 1 State Champions! We knew going into the tournament that there were a handful of teams that had a very good chance of winning the title and that it was just going to take a solid team effort to win. The tournament was held at the Randolph sports complex on the par 70 Dell Urich golf course, playing just over 6600 yards. We were able to post a team total of 3 under par after play on Friday and held a one shot lead over Desert Vista, a 4 shot lead over Red Mountain, and a 5 shot lead over both Hamilton and Pinnacle. We were led by Tyler Kertson and his hole in one on the par 3 5th hole. Tyler’s hole in one turned out to be a huge shot that helped solidify our lead at the end of the first day. Tyler finished the front 9 on day one with a very impressive round of 5 under par. We went into day two knowing that we had to get off to a good start on the first few holes because there were 4 great teams just a few shots behind us and all of them had the ability to catch us if we slipped up. After 9 holes of play on day 2 we still held a 0ne shot lead over Desert Vista and the 2011 season was going to come down to the final 9 holes. As we neared the end of the round we had lost a few shots but Ryan Theisen and Blake Toolan were both able to birdie 16 giving us a little boost. As scores began to post behind 18 green we thought that we might not be able to hold on to the lead…and it came down to the final hole. Fortunately Blake Toolan was able to get up and down from behind the green to save par and secure the win…our first team title in 12 years. Tyler Kertson finished in the top 5 as an individual posting a 36 hole total of 5 under par.
Special congratulations to Pinnacle’s Zach Wright who won the indivdual title posting rounds of 62,63 to finish 15 under par.
