Track returns key talent from championship year for new season

A year after winning its first state championship and competing at the Nike Track Nationals, the Brophy track team returns with multiple athletes from last season.
However, the Broncos will be without a few talented athletes from last season. Most notably, Will Firth ’11 and Tommy Williams ’11 have graduated since guiding the Broncos to the state championship last May.

Track races ahead of competitors in season-opening tournaments
Brophy’s experienced track and field team has kicked off the 2011 track season with early meets and competitions against solid opposing teams.
The track team is coming off a solid fourth place finish in the state championship meet last season, which resulted in an invite to Nike Track Nationals for a selected group of athletes.
Track and field uses sports campus for first full season

The Brophy track and field team will use the Brophy Sports Complex for the first full season, after only using it for a few months last April after the grand opening.
“With the new track facility we can train more consistently and more specifically on all our events,” said Mr. Bill Kalkman, head of the track and field program.
The team will host their first home invitational March 11.
Track hopes to speed straight to the top with mix of young, veteran athletes

With a new sports campus on hand and myriad new and rising athletes, this season is looking bright for the Brophy track team.
“In track, you are presented with a personal challenge to work hard, become the best you possibly can at your event, and you get to train with the support of your team,” said head track coach Mr. Bill Kalkman.
The coaches were quick to point out that track is the only co-ed sport at Brophy.
“It’s one of the few sports where men and women compete equally on the same athletic field,” said assistant track coach Mr. Mike Welty ’83.
Brophy runner continues to stand out on top
Since the fith grade, Brophy star runner Will Firth ’11 has been competing in some way or another.
He said he only began running cross country to train for his primary sport, tennis, but after winning a few races his eighth-grade year, he began to take it more seriously.
“It wasn’t until my freshman year in high school that I ran cross country,” Firth said, “I really blossomed and I started running really well and became a part of the varsity cross country team.”
