December 17, 2009 - The headline is cliche, I know, & around Brophy it's commonplace but the Brophy Calc Club exemplhfies the motto we throw around....Men for Others...in every sense. They've flown under the radar for far too many years, any Brophy Calculus student knows that. For membership to this group, you need only be taking Brophy Calculus or Differential Equations…but it’s about so much more than just the math.
For years, Brophy Calculus teacher Dan Whitehead (photographed left) has encouraged students to be in stewardship with God and give to those in need. This year is no exception. His classroom today is filled with pillows, bikes, a stove, mattresses, bunk beds, countertop ovens and today he’s expecting a dresser.
In addition to these essentials each family will receive Christmas trees and $1,500 in food cards from local grocery stores. Local businesses were easy to enlist, like the recent Chipotle burrito night as well as the local YMCA who, in response to the project, has put up Christmas donation
trees and encourage their YMCA
members to support the project.
Current Brophy dad, Vincent Guerithault has contributed to the project as well by allowing them to sell Cookies in a Jar at the Vincent’s Saturday Market. Every Wednesday, the Calc Club uses the kitchen at Vincent’s on Camelback to prepare the jars. Mr. Whitehead humbly says, “We don’t do it for the publicity. I want the boys to want to do charitable work. When senior students are shopping for gifts for a little girl…it changes them. They feel they’ve done something special.”
The students raise approximately $14,000 during the Christmas and Easter season.
