Summit on Human Dignity:: The Wages of War, The Potential for Peace

Dr. Rick Brennan '72 recently spoke at Brophy's bi-annual Summit on Human Dignity. This semesters' 2- week long topic entitled "The Wages of War, The Potential for Peace" sparked thought provoking and lively discussions amongst Brophy students and faculty.

Dr. Brennan's speech was entitled "Military Peacekeeping and The Iraq War." He spoke about the role of the United States in peacekeeping and peacemaking during the 1990s.  He also talked about the current war in Iraq from the vantage point of a soldier and scholar who recently completed a fifteen-month deployment in Baghdad.

Dr. Brennan is a retired Army officer who earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from UCLA.  During his military career he served in infantry command and staff positions, was an assistant professor at West Point, and served on the personal staff of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon.  He expects to return to Iraq this summer in a Senior Diplomat capacity.

Alumni engages Brophy Health Classes

On February 26, 2008, Will French (’99) spoke to all of the second semester Health classes, as an introduction into their unit on Nutrition and Fitness.  Will used his book, “Turnover:  A Lifestyle Change” as a springboard for the discussion.  His theme was healthy decision making.  He cited his unique experiences and the relationships he has formed in his life, to send a very positive message to our freshmen about healthy living, and revealed his conscious decision to improve his own health.

Will was a manager for the University of Arizona men’s basketball team, during his time in Tucson.  He forged several close relationships with very high level athletes, and Coach Lute Olson.  These relationships, and his witness of the hard work, dedication, and focus of these men, inspired him to take a close look at his own life, and make positive change.  His message was very well received, as he recounted funny stories and promoted healthy physical, emotional, and spiritual living.  The Health & Physical Education Department and the freshmen health students are very appreciative of Will French’s willingness to share his time and energy is such an affirmative, constructive way

Brophy Bridge

Think back…..it’s senior year at Brophy and you’re about to graduate, headed for college.  Now what?  How did you feel as you were leaving home?  Excited?  Scared?  Numb?  Who’s going to do my laundry?

The Brophy Bridge lets Brophy seniors, soon to be Brophy graduates, know that they are not alone in the city they are about to move to.  The Bridge creates a connection between Brophy alumni and recent grads to offer friendship, encouragement, information and community during their college years.  If you still live near your college alma mater and are willing to offer support to your new brothers, we’d like to add you to this list.

Visit the webpage to see who's on the list. (Bridge ) Remember, the 'lads' who have added their names to this list have given their information to the Bridge ONLY. Any use of the contact information for purposes other than intended is strictly prohibited.

Contact Stephanie Stefani, Alumni Liaison, via email to add your name and email address to this list
at sstefani@brophyprep.org.

In the true spirit of “Men for Others,” we hear time and time again “you always know when you meet a person....that they’ve graduated from a Jesuit institution.

Brophy Mourns Father John Becker, S.J.
It is with great sadness that we announce
Father John Becker, S.J. of the Brophy Jesuit Community passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2008.
Father Becker had been with the Brophy Community since 1977 and
taught English among many other subjects.

Principal Bob Ryan said in an email sent to parents this week, "I spent third period today with the students in Father Becker’s sophomore English class.  They fondly told stories of the idiosyncratic ways he taught them to remember the finer points of English grammar.  They spoke of his proclivity to inject a pun into nearly every sentence and they all knew that his favorite food was Laura Scudder’s Peanut Butter.  They remarked that he wasn’t necessarily interested in their grades but whether or not they were improving in their mastery of the English language. They cared about him because they knew of his love and concern for each of them.  Father Becker will certainly be missed by many.
