IN MEMORIAM

November 30, 2009 - Ruth Whitcher passed away this morning. Ruth was the first true secretary at Brophy, having started not long after the school re-opened with Father Harrington in 1952, she served every President thereafter up to Father Mathewson. (Ruth's photograph was taken from the 1991 yearbook. She's pictured here with Jason Hawksworth,
Chris Herman, Jimmy Blondin and
Steve Butler.
)

Father Mathewson spoke highly of Ruth today via phone saying,

"Ruth was more than a secretary, she was a close friend to everyone she worked with, and the whole community. She intended to work part-time but working at Brophy was not a job for Ruth...it was a vocation, it became her life. She was not only the secretary for the school but also took care of secretarial duties for the Rector of the Community.  Every president Ruth worked with attended her retirement dinner including Fathers Harrington, Moore and Cobb, Fathers Thom, Sauer, Mitchell and myself. Ruth Whitcher was a Brophy legend."

Father Olivier commented this morning, "Ruth was the perfect secretary. She was a long-time resident of Phoenix and knew the community extremely well." Her husband Gene passed away a few years ago but served the Brophy Board of Trustees for many years before his passing. Ruth & Gene also had ties to Brophy alumni: their 2 sons, Bob '63 and Bill '61 and a grandson, Jeffrey '84, who is part of the Brophy alum rock band who played at the Auction last year. Brophy's prayers are with the Whitcher family.

Funeral Mass for Ruth will take place on Friday, December 11th at 1:30 PM in the Brophy Chapel. Father Olivier will be the celebrant.

November 17, 2009 - Father Mike Gilson was part of the Phoenix Jesuit community & taught at Brophy from 2002 -2007. Father Gilson remains a close & dear friend to the Brophy community and serves on the Brophy Board of Trustees.

This past weekend he took his final vows at Jesuit High School in Sacramento where he currently is a faculty member and the Rector of the Jesuit community. (photographed with former Brophy Bronco now California Provincial Father John McGarry, S.J.)

A quote from Father Gilson’s homily at his Mass for final vows. “I took my first vows as a Jesuit sixteen years ago.  And the Jesuits who took those vows with me are here today; I’m very happy about that.  We ended our vows that day with these words:  “As you have given me the desire to make this offering, so may you give me the grace to fulfill it.”

November 16, 2009 - Brophy Baseball Coach
