It was certainly tough news to hear. Coach Jeff Kearin, the man who led the Bronco football team to an 18-6 record over the past two seasons, including the memorable and emotional trip to the semi-finals last season, has chosen to leave Brophy. Kearin will take the head coaching position for his alma mater, Loyola High in Los Angeles, CA. He decided to move closer to his family and roots, being a third generation at Loyola, but he will be greatly missed nonetheless.
Kearin will be replaced by former assistant coach, Scooter Molander. Molander spent his Friday nights working in the press box at Phoenix College, constantly talking with the offensive and defensive coordinators. He comes in to take over a program that is already very fundamentally sound.
The Broncos will return a great set of players from last year’s semi-final team. All-State 2nd Team defensive back Mike Callaghan returns to make a statement in his senior year, and sophomore Blake Behrens is back with two seasons left to play, coming off last year’s All-State Honorable Mention.
Other returning Broncos receiving honors last year include:
Matt Smith, WR- All-Region 2nd Team
Troy Taylor, LB- All-Region 2nd Team
Matt Rosen, C- All-Region Honorable Mention
Rashaad Barnett, DE- All-Region Honorable Mention
Also coming back for the Broncos is junior Cole Graybill, who spent last season playing for Stephenville High School, in Stephenville, TX. This past season, Cole recorded 72 tackles, four passes broken up, two fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles at linebacker. He also received All-Region 1st Team honors while playing there, so I’m sure Molander is glad to have him back.
Although it will be tough to replace our All-State 1st Team running back, Markel Devorce, everyone still believes they can get the job done.
